Puedo imaginar que te has hecho esta pregunta más de una vez. El tener claro el concepto de deuda es sumamente importante para poder entender cómo manejarlas. La deuda por definición es la obligación que tiene una persona de pagar o devolver una cosa, generalmente dinero.
¿Sabías que en Panamá, los créditos otorgados de tipo personal, aumentaron en un 14% al cierre del año 2015, según la APC (Asociación Panameña de Crédito)? Esto se traduce a una deuda de al menos 22 mil 774 millones de dólares para los panameños. Los créditos de tipo personal, son: hipotecas, préstamos de autos, préstamos personales y tarjetas de crédito. Aquí también entran contratos de telefonía, compras a créditos en mueblerías entre otros.
Volviendo a la pregunta del título de este Blog, ¿Cómo es que llegué a tener estas deudas? lo que pasa es que lentamente vamos acumulando deudas a través de los años y no nos damos cuenta de lo que está ocurriendo, hasta que ya es demasiado tarde. No, no soy dramática, créame le pasa a más personas de las que creen. ¿Por qué suele pasar esto?, porque ocurre un daño a la habilidad del prestatario de pagar, por ejemplo: algo inesperado como perder el empleo, alguien se enferma, llega un nuevo hijo a la familia, como ven, algo inesperado puede ser tanto negativo como positivo pero en fin nos afecta la habilidad de poder cumplir con nuestras deudas.
Para que podamos entender realmente cuanto es lo que me cuesta tener una deuda, pongo de ejemplo las deudas más comunes que adquirimos: Las tarjetas de crédito y la hipoteca de la casa.
Supongamos que tienes un saldo de $5,000.00 en tu tarjeta de crédito a una tasa de interés del 23% anual, esto te costaría la suma de $1,150.00 sólo en interés anualmente. Analiza el siguiente cuadro; lo modifique un poco, pero la idea es del libro “Su dinero cuenta” por Howard Dayton:
Como vez, tus acreedores saben el gran potencial que tiene el interés compuesto cuando trabaja a su favor, por eso los bancos se mueren por darte tarjetas de crédito. Claramente tener una deuda cuesta más de lo que uno cree.
La hipoteca de tu casa.
Si adquieres una hipoteca a 30 años con una tasa del 6.75% anual, ¿Cuánto crees que terminarás pagando por tu casa? Observa este ejemplo:
Señores, las deudas a menudo nos llevan a una fatiga mental, física y emocional. Anulan nuestra creatividad, porque nuestra mente es invadida por estrés y cansancio. Afectándonos en todas las áreas de nuestras vidas.
Cuando te sientes así, busca ayuda, cuanto antes mejor, hay muchas maneras de cómo transformar tu presente de deudas en un futuro libres de ellas, solo tienes que tomar la decisión primero de educarte, adquirir conocimiento en finanzas personales para luego tener la disciplina y compromiso de poner en práctica lo aprendido.
Pero no todas las deudas son malas, no estoy diciendo eso, según “Howard Dayton” podemos adquirir una deuda para comprar una casa, para invertir en un buen negocio o en estudios.
Siempre y cuando se cumplan estos tres principios:
- Que lo que estemos comprando sea algo que tenga el potencial de aumentar en valor o producir ganancia.
- Que el valor del objeto sea igual o exceda la suma que debemos por él.
- Que la deuda no sea tan alta que su pago ponga presión innecesaria en nuestro presupuesto.
Lo ideal, justo y necesario es que después de adquirir una deuda que reúna estos principios, inmediatamente te propongas a saldarla lo antes posible. Estaré hablando de cómo salir de deudas en el blog de la próxima semana.
